What is catheter ablation?

Catheter ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat heart rhythm disorders. Thin flexible catheters are passed into the heart via the veins, allowing the source of the arrhythmia to be precisely mapped and treated with energy — most commonly radiofrequency, cryotherapy or pulsed-field energy.

Restore normal rhythm

Most patients are discharged the same day or after one night.

Procedure overview

    Most patients return home within 24 hours. Light activity is recommended for 1–2 weeks, with a return to normal activity shortly after. A follow-up review is arranged at 6–12 weeks.

    Success rates & risks

    Success rates depend on the arrhythmia treated. SVT and typical flutter ablation are typically >95% successful. AF ablation success rates range 70–85% depending on AF type — sometimes requiring more than one procedure.

    Risks

  • Vascular complications at the access site
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Cardiac perforation (rare)
  • Stroke (very rare, mitigated by anticoagulation)
  • Need for repeat procedure in a minority of patients
