Cardiac Investigations

Modern diagnostic testing performed in leading London facilities

ECG (Electrocardiogram)

What it is

A simple painless test that records the electrical activity of the heart.

Why it is performed

First-line for chest pain, palpitations, syncope and suspected arrhythmias.

What to expect

A 5–10 minute test with 10 stickers placed on the chest, arms and legs.

Results interpretation

Often interpreted immediately, with discussion at the consultation.

Echocardiogram

What it is

An ultrasound scan of the heart that assesses structure and function.

Why it is performed

Evaluates valves, chamber size, pumping function and pericardium.

What to expect

20–40 minute scan with a probe placed on the chest using gel.

Results interpretation

Reported and discussed at the same visit where possible.

Holter Monitor

What it is

An ambulatory ECG recorder worn for 24 hours up to several weeks.

Why it is performed

Detects intermittent arrhythmias and correlates symptoms with rhythm.

What to expect

A small device with a few skin electrodes — worn at home as normal.

Results interpretation

Comprehensive arrhythmia report with expert interpretation.

Exercise Stress Test

What it is

ECG monitoring during graded exercise on a treadmill.

Why it is performed

Assesses cardiac response, ischaemia and exercise-induced arrhythmias.

What to expect

Approximately 30 minutes, including preparation and recovery.

Results interpretation

Discussed at the visit; further testing arranged if needed.

CT Coronary Angiogram

What it is

A non-invasive CT scan to assess the coronary arteries.

Why it is performed

Excellent first-line for investigating chest pain and CAD risk.

What to expect

Approximately 15 minutes, often with a contrast injection.

Results interpretation

Detailed report with calcium score and coronary imaging.

Cardiac MRI

What it is

Detailed imaging of the heart muscle, valves and major vessels.

Why it is performed

Tissue characterisation, scar assessment, cardiomyopathy work-up.

What to expect

30–60 minutes inside the scanner, sometimes with contrast.

Results interpretation

Comprehensive specialist report with images.

Implantable Loop Recorder

What it is

A tiny long-term ECG monitor implanted just under the skin of the chest.

Why it is performed

Detects infrequent arrhythmias, unexplained syncope and cryptogenic stroke work-up.

What to expect

A brief outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. The device records for up to 3 years.

Results interpretation

Continuous remote monitoring with expert review of any recorded events.
